Why Is Periodic Inspection Mandatory?
Under occupational health and safety legislation, all lifting and handling equipment must be inspected by accredited bodies at specific intervals. These inspections verify the safe operating condition of the equipment and prevent potential accidents.
Inspection Intervals
- Overhead and portal cranes: Once a year
- Mobile cranes: Once a year
- Jib cranes and hoists: Once a year
- Wire ropes: Visual every 3 months, detailed once a year
- Hooks: Non-destructive inspection once a year
Inspection Process
Periodic inspection is carried out by accredited bodies. The process covers visual inspection, functional tests, load tests and non-destructive testing methods.
Load Tests
Static load test is performed at 125% of capacity, dynamic load test at 110%. An initial 150% static test is applied on first installation.
Pre-Inspection Preparation
Companies should complete daily maintenance before inspection, have previous reports ready and secure the crane area.
