The Importance of Crane Rails

The crane rail system is the supporting structure on which overhead and portal cranes travel. Rail quality and installation precision directly affect crane life, operational safety and maintenance costs.

Rail Types

Square Rails

Square or rectangular steel sections are used on light and medium-capacity cranes. They offer low cost and easy installation.

Crane Rails (Profile Rails)

Profile rails made specifically for crane applications are designed to carry high wheel loads. They are manufactured in DIN, ASCE and CR standards in sizes such as A45, A55, A65, A75 and A100.

Installation Standards

  • Span tolerance: Nominal span +/- 10 mm
  • Height difference: Max. 10 mm between opposite rails
  • Straightness: Max. 1 mm deviation over 2 meters
  • Joint gap: Max. 2 mm

Fastening Methods

Rails can be fixed to the beam with welded clips, bolted clips or direct welding. Joints must be planned with thermal expansion calculations.

Periodic Inspection

Rail systems should be measured with laser alignment equipment at least once a year. Checking the rail surface for wear, cracks and deformation is also part of periodic maintenance.
